WHO IS
COMMISSIONER OLIVER?

Commissioner Hope Oliver is the first Black woman elected to represent District 1 on the Rutherford County Commission.  A native of Memphis, TN, she has been a resident of La Vergne, TN since 1999.  She and her husband, Kevin, chose Rutherford County to raise their four children, Kevin Jr, Kaitlin, Kyle, and Kaleb, because of its stellar schools.  Her pride and joy are her grandchildren, Karter Grey, Klover Autumn, Kasey James, Kruz Amir, and her angel grand baby Kayden Ameerah.

 

A proud graduate of Tennessee State University,  Commissioner Oliver  recently completed her Doctorate in Educational Leadership and Organizational Management at Rockhurst University.  She has enjoyed careers as a registered dental hygienist, an educator, a CPR Instructor, and a curriculum consultant. As a lifelong learner, Commissioner Oliver says that she is still figuring out what she wants to do when she grows up.

 

With a heart for Social Action, Commissioner Oliver is a member of the Rutherford County Democratic Party , The NAACP, and the Rutherford County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. She is also a member of the Epsilon Psi Chapter of Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Incorporated, the first Black Women’s Business Sorority, and The Pyramid Foundation of Tennessee which focuses on mental health disparities.

 

Commissioner Oliver has received multiple awards for her work in education and social action.  Most recently, she was honored as the 2023 Rutherford County NAACP Woman of the Year and the 2025 Lois Deberry Servant Leadership Award for Social Action.

 

Commissioner Oliver serves on the Health & Education, Public Safety, and Audit Committees of the Commission. She advocates for public schools, gun reform, voter registration and engagement, women’s reproductive rights, and criminal justice reform.  Commissioner Oliver prides herself on being a servant leader that is a good listener and unafraid to ask the hard questions.
